Fast Retailing and UNIQLO Efforts for the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

One of 4Ps Marketing’s clients, UNIQLO, Japanese clothing retailer, are providing huge support in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that hit the country this week.

The largest earthquake in Japan’s history struck the nation on March 11, 2011. The Tohoku-chiho Taiheiyo-oki Earthquake hit north-eastern Japan with a magnitude of 9.0 and was followed by a devastating tsunami. As the death toll continues to rise, we at UNIQLO and Fast Retailing mourn the many victims of this horrific natural disaster and our thoughts are with their families and people close to them. We extend to them our deepest condolences in this time of sadness.

In this difficult time, the Fast Retailing Group and its personnel are coming together to do their utmost to leverage the group’s resources to help to support and lead the nation on its path to recovery.

Specific support activities are outlined below:

Customer Monetary Donation Contributions:

All Fast Retailing Group stores, which total approximately 2,200 stores globally, will have monetary contribution boxes in stores for customers to show their goodwill by offering donations to help victims of this disaster.

Specifically, UNIQLO UK are working in partnership with the British Red Cross who will transfer all donations to the Japanese Red Cross Society. From today, UNIQLO UK customers are able to make contributions online via www.redcross.org.uk/JapanUniqlo and from Friday 18 March via in-store monetary donation boxes at all 13 UNIQLO UK stores.

Clothing Contributions:

Fast Retailing will be sending approximately 700 million yen (approx. £5.3 million) worth of its own clothing stock to disaster victims, including 300,000 pieces of HEATTECH items, as warm clothing is in the greatest demand, as well as other articles of innerwear, outerwear, jeans, towels and other necessary clothing items.

Monetary Contributions:

The Fast Retailing Group will distribute donations in the form of disaster relief through organisations such as the Japanese Red Cross Society to the most seriously hit areas; Miyagi, Iwate, Fukushima, Aomori and Ibaraki. In total, 1.4 billion yen (approximately £10.6 million) will be donated. The breakdown is as follows;
- The Fast Retailing Group company will contribute 300 million yen (approx. £2.3 million).
- Fast Retailing Group employees worldwide will contribute 100 million yen (approx. £750,000).
- Fast Retailing President, Chairman and CEO Tadashi Yanai will make a personal donation of 1 billion yen (approx. £7.6 million).
